Disrupt HR Presentation 2023
The Three Courages | Frank Newman | DisruptHR Talks from DisruptHR
Courage is not something we think about every day as a Leader, yet it’s one of the five
essential leadership skills. The others are Connecting, Compassion, Coaching and Compassion.
(From my upcoming book, Your Best Ten Minutes). Too often I have witnessed that a lack of
courage, or the wrong kind of courage, can dramatically impact companies and careers.
Think about your role as a Leader. Are you a window or a mirror? If you are a window, you
are transparent and nothing changes. Things pass by observed, but unchanging.
Recently, I was privileged to be one of the speakers for DisruptHR KW . In this article, I share
the highlights from my talk.
On the other hand, if you are a mirror, you have the power of reflection. For a moment,
imagine you are carrying a mirror in your pocket. Let’s call it the “Mirror of Courage”. A
mirror is a powerful tool. Great leaders use their mirror to reflect back on what’s happening
in an organization. Often, other leaders may not see what’s really taking place. Holding up
the mirror allows others to see what they may be overlooking or ignoring, and then you can
work with them to take action.
Equally, you can turn the mirror to reflect who you are. You can use it to reflect on your
impact in an organization, what you’ve done, or not done, and recognize that we are
continually learning. Taking a moment to reflect allows you to course-correct.
Here’s the three courages that will dramatically shape your impact.
- The courage to make tough decisions, exemplified by the often-dreaded act of terminating
an employee, or confronting the ubiquitous elephant in the room that no one wants to talk
about. - The courage to provide honest feedback, knowing that the truth can set anyone free.
- The courage to admit you’re wrong, and the liberating power it holds.
Being conscious of these courages every day will add to your super powers and will take your
career and your reputation as a leader to the next level. You’ll never look back! I hope you
enjoy the video and let me know which courage has made the most impact on your career.
